Fred E. Tannous | Managing Director, North America

With 20 years of finance and corporate development experience, Fred E. Tannous brings financial management, strategy, M&A and business development expertise to the US First Capital team. As co-founder and Managing Director, Mr. Tannous helps clients succeed through focused support covering financial and strategic planning, modeling and analytics, M&A and integration, financial marketing, risk management and international expansion strategies. His toolkit is complimented by broad industry experience in financial services, telecom, gaming & lodging, nutritional sciences, e-commerce and technology/software.

Over the course of his professional career, Mr. Tannous has launched several start-up companies and worked extensively with numerous emerging companies to improve performance, enhance enterprise value and maximize returns, in addition to helping challenged companies develop winning strategies, negotiate settlements and implement effective action plans. Mr. Tannous previously spent over 10 years in chief executive and chief financial officer roles in technology, hospitality and nutritional sciences sectors. He has negotiated successful acquisitions, led due diligence teams, crafted successful integration plans, and arranged numerous financings and banking facilities. His background as former executive with emerging and mid-market companies provides him with a unique perspective on business and financial issues.

Career Highlights

As co-founder and former Chief Executive Officer of a publicly-traded nutrition technology company, Mr. Tannous was involved in all aspects of its operations, starting with a direct public offering to effecting several key business acquisitions and business development programs resulting in a market capitalization of more than $80 million at its peak.

As Manager of Investments and Acquisitions at DIRECTV, Inc., a division of Hughes Aircraft/Electronics, he oversaw a $1 billion equity portfolio and was involved in valuing, structuring and executing strategic investments and business enhancement opportunities.

As Chief Financial Officer of a publicly-traded gaming and lodging concern, Mr. Tannous was instrumental in obtaining its listing on the NASDAQ SmallCap market and raising over $65 million in combined private equity and debt financing to expand its operations.

While a key member of the structured finance team in corporate treasury at Hughes, Mr. Tannous was involved in effectuating over $500 million in transactions for its operating units. Some of the transactions included:

  • a combined $125 million investment in Research in Motion (RIM), TIVO, and XM Radio;
  • a $180 million acquisition of Telocity, Inc.;
  • and coordinated sale of over $150 million in Thompson Multimedia stock.


Mr. Tannous received an MBA in finance and accounting from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. He also holds Masters and Bachelors degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California. In addition, he has completed coursework in international business at SDA Bocconi in Milan, Italy. Mr. Tannous has extensive international experience and is conversant in three languages. He lives with his wife and two boys in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
